How Teen Braces Work
Teen braces are orthodontic devices designed to correct misaligned teeth and jaw problems in teenagers. Metal braces, the most common type, consist of brackets attached to each tooth, connected by wires, which are periodically tightened to gradually move the teeth into place. Lingual braces work similarly to metal braces but are attached to the back of the teeth, making them less visible. Clear aligners, like Invisalign, are transparent, removable trays that fit over the teeth, offering a discreet option. They are replaced every few weeks to guide the teeth’s movement. Regardless of the type, these braces apply gentle pressure over time to straighten teeth and correct bite issues, improving your child’s oral health and self-confidence.
What to Expect
What your teen should expect will depend on the braces options decided on. For example, with clear aligners they will be able to take them out to eat and floss normally, and switch out aligners to progress their treatment. InBrace, by contrast, uses the same basic method as traditional braces, but placed on the inside of the teeth. Your provider will ensure you understand exactly what to expect of whatever treatment works best for your teen.

Frequently Asked Questions
There is no one best age for braces. It’s good to bring your child in for their first orthodontic exam by the time they’re 7 years old, and braces could be an option from that point onward.
How long anyone needs braces simply depends upon the type of braces and the starting point of the teeth. Before any treatment starts, your orthodontist will ensure you and your teen understand how long the braces will be worn.
